Leaving our mark on Malaysia

Malaysia had a few fun 'firsts' - our first border crossing by land, our first new country for 2014 and the first time we've been asked by a guy working in a frozen yoghurt shop if he could have his picture taken with us! We're still not sure what it was that made him want a picture... Our amazingly good looks, or our numerous tattoos... I'm going with the good looks!

Getting to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint proved to be quite a mission. In the end we decided to fork out for a taxi (and the more expensive train ticket from Singapore) because we didn't have enough time, nor did we want to carry our luggage halfway across the country on several local buses and trains to get there. There are only certain taxis that can get you across to Malaysia to book the cheaper train tickets (and these taxis cost more, of course!). Tickets for the train from Singapore to KL Sentral can be purchased in several ways and depending where you book (Singapore or Malaysia) will determine how much you pay. For a full explanation I'd suggest checking out the following website before booking http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm#.U2CJF62SwbQ. It also suggests which seats to book for the best view and to ensure you are facing forwards instead of backwards for the journey - I don't know about you, but the thought of traveling backwards for hours makes my stomach churn.

The train trip was interesting. We were in a non smoking car but unfortunately the air conditioning was blowing smoke from another car into ours, yuck!

I'd read online that you can buy food onboard from the 'restaurant carriage'. I'm not sure if we were looking in the wrong place, but all we found was a guy sitting a few cars from us with a trolley that had cold meals that were supposed to be hot (noodles etc) and a rather interesting sweet tasting bread stick with melted cheese on top. It filled us up so that was the main thing.

By the time we arrived at KL Sentral I'd become quite good at quickly snapping photos as we went past things. Don't be fooled though, we weren't flying past at 100 miles an hour. No, this was a more leisurely paced train. This is something that gave us quite a laugh along the way once we realised we probably could've run there faster!

We were staying just outside the city centre towards Chow Kit and it was perfect for us - close enough to walk to the Perdana Botanical Garden for me to explore while Scotty ran; there were night markets in the streets right behind our hotel; and it was only a 20 minute walk to the Petronas Twin Towers and other sightseeing attractions. There were two train stations both within a 10 minute walk of the hotel which gave us access to the whole city and beyond.

I love exploring new places and navigating your way around with very little knowledge of how you're actually going to get somewhere or where it is you're actually going.

We did a trip out to the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) which was really cool. We caught the train to Kepong Sentral Station and got off there to catch a taxi the rest of the way. One thing to watch out for, and something we've come across on several occasions in different countries, is taxi drivers pretending they don't know where you're asking them to take you, but knowing full well where it is and just not wanting to take you because it's such a small fare. This happened when we were leaving FRIM, two different drivers pretended they didn't know where the train station was that we needed to get to. We were actually in one of the taxis and he kept trying to ask why we wanted to go to that particular train station instead of all the way back into KL. We pretended we were meeting friends there so he started acting like he couldn't understand where we meant and that he didn't know where it was, so we had to get out and hail another taxi. By the third driver I was getting quite frustrated so asked him straight up if he was going to take us to the train station or not, and he begrudgingly said yes.

Pretty excited about our visit to the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia
Apart from that it was a fantastic experience visiting FRIM. You got to walk up through the forest to a tree top canopy which had fantastic views. You then make your way back down along the river and through the forest to where you started. There were locals swimming in the river and having a lovely time. Just watch out for leaches... I had one make it's way in between my toes without me realising and it had a great feast on my blood! Yuck!

Another highlight in KL was the Batu Caves, of course! You can't visit KL without going to the Batu Caves. And who doesn't love walking up hundreds of stairs to see inside! To be completely honest, the actual cave itself isn't really anything to write home about in my opinion (for those that haven't been in many caves then you'll love it), but the whole experience and the view from outside with the giant Hindu statue and all the stairs leading up to the cave is an impressive sight.

Another must see of course are the Petronas Twin Towers. We had quite an adventure getting there with it starting to rain when we were halfway from our hotel with no umbrella. But you don't mind a bit of rain when it's still 30 degrees. The towers are really impressive - such amazing modern architecture.

A very cool fountain outside the Petronas Twin Towers
To get stunning views of the towers at night I recommend going to Traders Hotel. They have a fantastic skybar with window seats (couches) that look straight out onto the towers. Get in early though, the window seats get snapped up quickly, and once you've got one, you'd be mad to let it go!

Having a drink at the Traders Hotel Skybar
Another fun touristy thing to do is a trip to the Menara Tower. We walked there from our hotel and got to see a birds eye view of the city at night which was really impressive. It was also fun to read about the other sky towers all over the world and the height of each tower.

Something I'm terrible at when traveling is relaxing. There's always so much to see and so little time. But, I made an exception in KL. We had a late afternoon flight so had some free time, but didn't want to head too far afield in case we got held up and couldn't get back to the airport in time (if you know my husband, you'll know that he hates airports and becomes rather stressed about getting to check in on time with luggage that doesn't exceed the weight allowance).

So, we made our way to Bukit Bintang (the shopping Mecca of KL) and spent the morning window shopping and eating. There was a whole floor dedicated to restaurants and cafes... perfect! We then decided to watch a movie at the cinema, after checking it was going to be in English of course. Because sitting and watching a movie is 'oh so stressful' we decided to treat ourselves to a massage at Seventh Heaven - a rather swanky place we found on the top floor of the mall that had a number of massage and beauty stores to choose from.

An afternoon of relaxation
It was the perfect way to end our time in Malaysia. We left KL feeling like we'd done everything we set out to do, and more!

Next stop... China!

'100 Happy Days' Challenge: Days 92 - 100

Wow! I can't believe 100 days have been and gone! The cliche is true - time really does fly when you're having fun!

When I started this challenge I thought it would just be a bit of fun and a good way to share some of my everyday life with my family, friends and other followers. But now that it's over and I stop and look back at some of the things that made me happy over that time, I realise how truly happy my life makes me. Even on the days when things didn't go according to plan, it was still easy to find something to smile about.

'Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day' - I love that quote! And after completing this challenge it has shown me how true it really is.

I hope you have all been taking time each day to think about the things that make you happy or put a smile on your face. And if you haven't already, I'd highly recommend completing this challenge. It's easy, and it makes you smile and appreciate all the good things happening in your life... the perfect challenge really!

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that has been sharing in this challenge with me by following me on insta or reading my posts each week. It's been heaps of fun sharing the past 100 days with you all.

And to finish up, here's a few of the things that made me happy over the final 9 days of the challenge:

Day 92 - 'Getting paid to play pool - best job in the world!'
I love hanging out with the kids at work, they are always making me laugh.

Day 93 - 'I love spending time with my beautiful nieces! And now that Amitty is at school she gives me lots of paintings to take home when I go to visit.'
Spending quality time with family is the most important thing in the world.

Day 94 - 'Holiday starts... NOW!'
I love working in a job that gives us 12 weeks annual leave!

Day 95 - 'Packing for my holiday - these should help me relax for the next week.'
As it turned out Scotty suggested just taking one book, and he was right! I read less than half a book...

Day 96 - 'A quick meal at the airport before boarding! Brings back great memories of all the amazing food in Japan! And yes, I got a donut for dessert!!'
This would have to be one of my favourite Japanese meals!

Day 97 - 'Getting to do my long run around Rarotonga this morning and having scenery like this to look at.'
Rarotonga had the most amazing sunrises and sunsets!

Day 98 - 'Laying flat on my back on the viewing platform where I'm staying watching the lunar eclipse and thinking about how blessed I am to live the life I do! (excuse the terrible quality of my iPhone photo).'
This was such a cool experience, and one I will never forget.

Day 99 - 'I had an amazing time tonight at the dinner and cultural show. I learnt so much about the Cook Island history and culture, ate way too much local food and danced with the performers.'
Such a fun night out with great company!

Day 100 - 'What makes me happy today, and every day... Life! Waking up every day and knowing the people I care about are healthy and happy. I have the most amazing family, the best friends anyone could ask for, I get to run every day and achieve goals I never thought possible, I get to travel the world and experience different cultures and meet new people, and I get to share every day with the one person that makes me happier than I ever thought I could be... my amazing husband, the love of my life @scott_hawker!! Choosing to make the most of every day has brought me so much happiness and has transformed my life! Here's to a lifetime of happiness, learning from the tough times, celebrating the good times, and living every day as if it's your last!!'
I only hope that by sharing my journey with you all, I can inspire others to live their best life too!

'100 Happy Days' Challenge: Days 85 - 91

Happy Grati-Tuesday!

This week has given me so many things to be grateful for - quality time with family and friends; two fantastic days of birthday celebrations including a game of supa golf and lunch out in the Swan Valley, a run and a morning of pampering with a girlfriend and a surprise lunch and tenpin bowling with my husband; and the opportunity to take some time out to focus on planning for the future and starting new hobbies.

I was speaking to my girlfriend yesterday and telling her how lucky I am that Scotty always plans nice things for me. She said that because I do the same for him it would make him want to do things for me in return.

This is true in any relationships in life, with family, friends or partners. If you put time and effort into your relationships you will receive the same in return. And it's only when you don't receive the same that you need to take a step back and think about whether or not it's a healthy relationship to be in, whether that's with a partner or with friends.

As important as it is to put 100% into your relationships, it's also important to realise when they are no longer working.

And that doesn't mean that you should only do things for people expecting something in return, because there's nothing nicer than doing things for others 'just because', but it does mean that you deserve the best in life and deserve to be treated the way you treat others.

I've removed myself from a few friendships over the last year because they weren't having positive effects on my life, and I'm happier now than I've ever been.

Everything you do in life should be done to bring you happiness. At the end of the day, life's too short to be anything but happy.

With that said, here's a few of the things that have made me happy this week:

Day 85 - 'Katy Perry tickets arrived today for me and my little sis! Now we just need to wait 7 months until the concert.'
My younger sister and I have been to so many concerts together, we always have the best time!
Day 86 - 'No matter how good today gets, nothing will beat waking up to a text from my beautiful Mumma in NZ. She is not a phone person (I had to teach her how to do full stops while we were in NZ) and this would've taken her a good 10 minutes to write! There's nothing more special than a daughter's bond with her Mumma!'
I can't wait to have mum back in Aus on Thursday!
Day 87 - 'I had the best time wandering around Scrapbook Secrets today and stocking up on supplies so that I can start creating some masterpieces! Can't wait for my first scrapbooking class so that I can actually learn what I'm doing!'
For over 12 months now I've been saying I want to get into scrapbooking, but I've never made the time. Finally, I feel like I've got the time to start.
Day 88 - 'Perfect Friday night in - watching the Eels beat the Broncos.'
Living in WA we don't get to watch the Eels play as much as we'd like, so this was a great way to spend the night.
Day 89 - 'Today was the first time in ages I've been able to make it to the farmers market (crazy considering it's on our 'front lawn'). Was so much fun buying fresh produce to use to cook breakfast (spinach and feta omelette with a side of avocado).'
I love wandering around the markets and buying fresh produce to cook with!
Day 90 - 'A birthday feast with some of my faves!'
I had such a lovely day with family and friends celebrating my birthday out in the Swan Valley.
Day 91 - 'Perfect end to the perfect birthday - getting a message back from our fave DJ to say he'll be playing in Sydney while we're there!! Time to go shopping for something to wear.'
We've seen Steve Hill play a couple of times in Christchurch and once in Auckland... Can't wait to see him play at his local in Sydney!

'100 Happy Days' Challenge: Days 78 - 84

Here we are at Grati-Tuesday again!

This week has been all about getting back into the routine of work and home life after being away for 2 weeks. As much as I love traveling and going on holidays, it's always nice to get home and sleep in our own bed for a while.

I can't believe we're already over 3/4 of the way through this challenge. The time has flown by!

What has made you happy this week? Visiting family, coffee with friends, holidays, or the content feeling you get from your everyday routine...? Whatever it might be that puts a smile on your face, remember to take some time each day to acknowledge the things or people that make you happy.

Here's a snapshot of what's made me happy over the past week:

Day 78 - 'I don't normally post pics on here that I've used on my fitness insta account but this was definitely a happy moment today - going for my first run post-race and not having any pain in my foot.'
I was so worried that I'd done some serious damage to my foot during the race that I was over the moon when it slowly got better over the week, and now I'm back into full training.
Day 79 - 'Making plans for the future - fun, scary and so very exciting!'
I can't wait to share our plans with you all once they have been finalised.
Day 80 - 'Getting paid to drink hot chocolate with my bestie - I love our job!'
Just one of the many perks of working with my husband.
Day 81 - 'Today marks our 3 year anniversary living in Perth! And what an amazing 3 years it has been.'
Not a day goes by that I don't feel completely blessed to be living the life that I do.
Day 82 - 'More than a little excited for the next four weeks - birthday celebrations, a trip to Rarotonga, Easter in Sydney and a surprise trip to visit someone I love.'
April is definitely one of my favourite months of the year.
Day 83 - 'Laughing to myself at the conversation I was having last week with my niece while I was trying to explain to her that I was her god mother. 'No, you're my god aunty!' Bless her! This photo was taken almost 4 years ago at her baptism when the godfather and I cut the cake.'
Such a special day that I'll always remember!
Day 84 - 'I finally got to see my friend for a run and a smoothie today after not seeing her for about a month! We certainly had a lot to catch up on.'
I love my weekly catch ups with friends!
