Tarawera Training - Week 5

Well, technically my taper started this week. It felt weird to be easing up on my training already when I'd only just started training a few weeks ago!

But, my coach knows best so I do as I'm told ;-)

The week started with a 2 hour easy run out on the Bibbulmun Track. Scotty was meeting a friend at the Mundaring Weir Hotel so I tagged along and did my own run from there.

We'd been down at the Lark Hill Dusk til Dawn Race the night before supporting friends as they competed in the 50/100km races and we didn't get home until 2am, so I wasn't really feeling 100%. I think it was probably the first time I've been running and thought that it would be really nice to just lay down and have a nap. If I wasn't so scared about snakes I just might have!

The run went really well, it seemed easy to do 2 hours after doing a long run the weekend before. I took one slight wrong turn which added in an extra hill (just my luck) but other than that it was easy going and a nice variety of trails and landscapes to enjoy along the way.

Monday got away from me (it might have been due to the fact that I was still trying to catch up on sleep from Saturday night) so I didn't get my run in.

I did my 60 minute easy run on Tuesday. I decided to go up to Bold Park because I didn't feel like running along the river and wanted some 'trails'. Albeit pretty hot it was a great run. It was the first time in months that I'd actually done a full lap of the Zamia Trail because every other time up at Bold Park recently I've just been doing a warm up before my hill repeats. I'd actually forgotten how much I enjoy the run up there and was thinking about some of the winter runs Kate and I have done up there in the pouring rain - obviously longing for the cooler weather.

The next day I went back up to Bold Park to do hill repeats. It was a much shorter session than what I've been doing in previous weeks so I made sure I pushed really hard. And the harder I pushed, the longer I got to rest. I had to run hard up for 30 seconds and then hard back down, and then start again when it got to the next minute - I usually had about 5 seconds rest between each rep.

On Friday morning Scotty and I went and parked near the WAMC Clubrooms on the river and did our run from there. It was a rest day for Scotty so he decided to come along with me. I had to do an interval session, but once again it was a shorter version of what I've been doing recently. It was fun running somewhere we hadn't been in ages and it was a great session. I was holding a pretty decent pace which I was pleased with.

Well, that was my final run in Australia before the race, our flight bound for NZ was leaving at 9.30 the next morning!

I'm going to post my final weekly update again on Friday (race day is Saturday) and then I'll do a race report next week some time!
